Jerry Z. Muller’s Foreign Affairs article, Us and Them: The Enduring
Power of Ethnic Nationalism (March/April, 2008), is a grim and timely
reminder of the power of ethnicity in human affairs. It has explosive
implications for the future of the United States and the West.

Muller demonstrates that, over the last 150 years or so, the general
trend in Europe and elsewhere has been toward the creation of
ethnically-based states—“ethnostates”. This trend did not end with the
close of World War II.  In Europe, the war was followed by a forced
resettlement of peoples—mainly Germans—to create ethnically
homogeneous states. Indeed, the high point of ethnic homogenization in
Europe was in the two generations in the immediate aftermath of World
War II.

This point is crucial. While the recent spreading of the European
Union imperium has given rise to a great deal of “post-nation”
rhetoric, it has in fact been accompanied by an astonishing
multiplication of ethnostates, split out of Yugoslavia and the former
USSR — not to mention, of course, the Czech/Slovak division

Ethnic conflict is apparent as well throughout the developing world,
and will likely lead to more partitioning and nation-creation. As
Muller notes: “In areas where that separation has not yet occurred,
politics is apt to remain ugly”.

But a huge anomaly has arisen. Recently, Western societies have
embarked on a public policy project in which the ethno nationalism of
white people is officially proscribed as an unadulterated evil.
Multiculturalism only is encouraged and viewed as morally superior. As
Muller notes: “Americans … find ethnonationalism discomfiting both
intellectually and morally”.

As a social scientist who takes the biological component of ethnicity
seriously (although I readily agree that there is a cultural component
as well), I can speak from personal experience about the hostility and
moral disdain one faces from other academic social scientists when one
points to these unfashionable facts.

Although World War II marked the defeat of the ethnonationalist
National Socialist movement, Muller is clearly correct that it
resulted in a Europe that was more accurately divided into ethnostates
than ever.  But World War II also saw the triumph of the political and
cultural Left. These two cultural facts have been at odds ever since.

German National Socialists remain the bogeyman of the political and
cultural Left to this day. The Left is utterly dedicated to
eradicating any vestiges of European ethnonationalism. Opponents of
immigration are routinely labeled “racists” or “Nazis” for advocating
policies that are, in fact, the norm in the rest of the world. Thus
Israel favors Jewish immigrants, Spain favors people from its former
Latin American Empire, India its “Non-Resident Indians” (NRIs), China
favors the Overseas Chinese.

As Muller notes: “In a global context, it is the [Western] insistence
on universalist criteria [for immigration] that seems provincial.”

And, Muller points out, the anomaly whereby Western nations have
sought to turn their backs on ethnic homogeneity is quite modern:

“The ethnonationalist view has traditionally dominated through much of
Europe and has held its own even in the United States until recently.
For substantial stretches of U.S. history, it was believed that only
the people of English origin, or those who were Protestant, or white,
or hailed from northern Europe were real Americans. It was only in
1965 that the reform of U.S. immigration law abolished the system of
national-origin quotas that had been in place for several decades.
This system had excluded Asians entirely and radically restricted
immigration from southern and eastern Europe.”

In attempting to account for this trend in opposition to
ethnonationalism in Western societies, my own writing has emphasized
the triumph of the Left and particularly the role of some Jewish
intellectual and political movements and certain elements of the
organized Jewish community as the  vanguard of the left and the most
important force in passage of the 1965 immigration law (PDF). As
Muller’s essay observes, Jews were major victims of the
ethnonationalism of others. Anti-Semitism was a general force
throughout Eastern and Central Europe, culminating in the slaughters
of World War II. And Muller notes that a prime motivation was that
Jews dominated areas of the economy and segments of the social class
structure to which others aspired—a principal theme of my book
Separation and Its Discontents.

This history of loss as a result of others’ ethnonationalism doubtless
goes a long way toward explaining the main thrust of Jewish
intellectual and political movements in the 20th Century—a principal
theme of my book The Culture of Critique.

For example, the Jewish opposition to immigration policies favoring
the European majority of the US dates back to before the immigration
cut-off of the 1920s and spans the entire mainstream Jewish political
spectrum, from the far left to the neoconservative right,  to this
day.

However, Jewish opposition to the ethnonationalism of Europeans and
European-derived peoples is in remarkable contrast to their unswerving
support for the Jewish ethnonationalist state of Israel — a rather
glaring double standard, to say the least. There is a rather
straightforward analogy of Jews as victims of nascent ethnonationalism
in Europe and Palestinians as victims of nascent Jewish ethno
nationalism in Israel. (And ex-President Carter, in his recent Peace
Not Apartheid, triggered much hysteria by noting the similarities
between the policing techniques of Israel and the Afrikaner
ethnonationalist state of pre-1990 South Africa.)

As Muller notes: “Social scientists go to great lengths to demonstrate
that [ethnonationalism] is a product not of nature but of culture,
often deliberately constructed. And ethicists scorn value systems
based on narrow group identities rather than cosmopolitanism. But none
of this will make ethnonationalism go away.” (My emphasis –KM)

Indeed, a mainstay of the intellectual left since Franz Boas and his
disciples came to dominate academic anthropology beginning in the
1920s has been a rejection of any theories that allow for biological
influences on culture. A corollary is that different peoples and
different cultures do not, therefore, have legitimate, biologically-
based conflicts of interest.

But the data are quite clear: There are genetic distances between
different peoples and different peoples therefore have legitimate
conflicts of interest. And: there are deep psychological roots to
ethnocentrism that make us attracted to and more trusting of
genetically similar others. (PDF)

These biological realities will not simply disappear, no matter how
fervently social scientists and other political and cultural elites
wish they would.

But that does not mean that these realities cannot be repressed—at
least temporarily. The response of the Left has been to entrench a
culture of “political correctness” in which expressions of
ethnocentrism by Europeans are proscribed. Organizations such as the
Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League seek
draconian penalties against such expressions by Europeans—and only
Europeans. Many European countries and Canada have savage legal
penalties that enforce intellectual conformity on these issues. In
America the sanctions are more informal—but nevertheless similarly
effective.

Whatever the drawbacks to ethnic nationalism (and the most obvious is
the bloodshed that sometimes accompanies the creation of ethnostates),
it has at least three overriding advantages expressed or implied by
Muller:

    * As also noted by Frank Salter, because of closer ties of kinship
and culture, ethnically homogeneous societies are more likely to be
open to redistributive policies such as social welfare.

    * Sociologists such as Robert Putnam have also shown that ethnic
homogeneity is associated with greater trust of others and greater
political participation.

    * And finally, as noted also by historians of European
modernization, ethnic homogeneity may well be a precondition of
political systems characterized by democracy and rule of law.

Political correctness in the West cannot be maintained without
constantly ratcheting up the social controls on individual thought and
behavior. Western societies will experience increased ethnic conflict.
Their governments will increasingly be obliged to enact draconian
penalties for deviations from political correctness. And probably also
to “correct” ethnic imbalances in social status and political power—
much as the Hapsburg and Ottoman empires of old were forced  in their
declining years to constantly bargain with rising ethnic pressure
groups. Democracy, representative government, and freedom will be
likely casualties.

Finally, Muller’s essay is interesting in that it highlights how
normal ethno national strivings are, even among Europeans.

It had been known at that point in 1964 - well, actually his whole
life, as well as to today - just what an "angry young man",
"maverick", and total nut case John McCain was.  Perhaps the US Navy
is taking this approach to cover their own ass.  Yeah, just imagine if
John McCain was involved in some incidence that caused the tragic loss
of life of someone else, that McCain was very negligent in the
accident, and the Navy, knowing that, just allowed McCain to continue
on his anti-social, loner ways.  That would make the Navy complicit in
anything that McCain did wrong for the rest of his time in the Navy.

Using 2010 as the base reference, the big gainer in the population
derby will be blacks or sub-Sahara Africans. This group will expand
almost 133% to 2.7 billion by 2060. By the middle of this century
blacks will represent 25.38% of world population, which is up
dramatically from the 8.97% they recorded in 1950.

The big population story of the 21st Century is shaping up to be the
status reversal of whites and blacks and the Indian baby boom. A side
bar will be the single digit minority role that whites will assume. Of
the 7 population groups studied, only whites are projected to sustain
an absolute decline in numbers.

In 1950 whites and blacks were respectively 27.98% and 8.97% of world
population. By 2060 these figures will almost reverse as blacks surge
to 25.38% and whites shrink to 9.76%. From 2010 the white population
will decline while blacks will add 1.2 billion to their numbers. In
this time frame the the Indian subcontinent will gain 1.2 billion
people. These groups and their governments will be looking for elbow
room, and the diminished presence of whites in Europe, and especially
in the relatively wide open spaces North America, will provide such an
opportunity. Specifically, countries like Canada, the United States,
Argentina, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, and Russia can expect to be
pressured to accept collectively hundreds of millions of refugees from
India, and sub-Sahara Africa.

Robert Gogolewski, 24, who was stationed at Lemoore Naval Air Station, was
sentenced Monday to 15 years in federal prison and 20 years probation on
child pornography charges. He also will be required to register as a sex
offender after his release.

The prosecutor said Gogolewski came under investigation after he attempted
to transmit two child pornography images in a January 2006 e-mail.

America Online detected the images and referred them to analysts at the
National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, which then turned the
information over to federal agents in Fresno.

When a search warrant was executed at Gogolewski's residence on LNAS, agents
found more than 900 still and 24 video images of child pornography.

Nov. 3, 2006 --Federal law enforcement officials on Thursday said more than
130 Central Valley sex offenders were arrested in a recent sweep that
highlighted Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative that focuses on
Internet sex crimes committed against children.

The arrests, said the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of California,
covered crimes from possession and distribution of child pornography to
failure to comply with state-mandated sex registration statutes.

During a news conference at the federal courthouse in Fresno, the US
Attorney said the Internet has been one of the great developments of our
age, but one that "has a dark and sinister side" that has driven a
"modern-day crime wave" centered on child predators.

Surrounded by local, state and federal law enforcement officials, he said
the recent three-day multiagency operation sweep, known as "Operation Valley
Predator," will be a regular occurrence, as will law enforcement efforts to
work together, as part of Project Safe Childhood.

The initiative of the U.S. Department of Justice is designed to increase
federal and state prosecutions of violent sexual predators of children.

The latest developments in the crackdown came Thursday:

Robert Gogolewski, who is stationed at Lemoore Naval Air Station, was
arrested on child pornography charges in San Diego, where he was being held
by the U.S. Navy on unrelated charges, according to federal officials.

According to an affidavit by ICE agent John Simmons, Gogolewski was tracked
down after the online service provider America Online notified the National
Center for Missing and Exploited Children of possible child pornography
being sent via e-mail.

FORMER ENLISTED NAVY MAN SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR
15 YEARS FOR TRAFFICKING IN CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

FRESNO, Calif.- The United States Attorney for the Eastern District of
California announced
that ROBERT GOGOLEWSKI, 24, formerly of Lemoore, California, was sentenced
by
the United States District Court Judge to 15 years to be followed by a
20-year term
of supervised release for receipt and distribution of images of minors
engaged in sexually
explicit conduct. GOGOLEWSKI will be required to register as a sex offender,
and his access to
minors, computers, and the internet will be restricted.

This case is the result of an investigation by the Naval Criminal
Investigative Service in
Lemoore, California and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)
office in Fresno,
California., with assistance from the Fresno County Sheriff's Department
Computer Crimes
Unit.

According to the assistant United States Attorney who prosecuted the case,
GOGOLEWSKI became the
subject of investigation after he attempted to transmit on January 19, 2006,
two images of child
pornography as attachments to an e-mail message using America Online (AOL).
AOL detected
the two images and referred them to analysts at the National Center for
Missing & Exploited
Children (NCMEC) through its CyberTipline. NCMEC then provided the Fresno
ICE office on
January 25, 2006 with sufficient information to identify GOGOLEWSKI as the
individual
responsible for transmitting the illegal images.

When a search warrant was executed at his residence on the Lemoore Naval Air
Station,
agents located more than 900 still and 24 video images of child pornography
saved on the
defendant's computer. Subsequent forensic review of the computer revealed a
"Buddy List"
entitled "Good Trade" that led to the identification of approximately two
dozen other persons
involved in trafficking child pornography images.

November 2 2008 -- Kameeldrift 's besieged smallholders said during
their second emergency meeting within just 4 months this weekend that
the SA Police was failing to protect them from the great many armed
attacks by huge, armed gangs which target the Afrikaner whites inside
their homes for murder and rape - usually stealing very little of

These Kameeldrift Afrikaners are not imagining things either: these

international attention, for instance two Flemish parliamentarians

that all the Belgian government's development-aid funding to the ANC-
regime had to be frozen until all this violence and chaos ended in SA
and the ANC-regime brought back the country's constitutional rule of
law.

And the Unrepresented Nations' and Peoples' Organisation also issued a
unanimous condemnation of the great many armed attacks against
Afrikaners at their farms and homes. This powerful international lobby
for the rights of small minorities in May also unanimously admitted

Oct 31 2008 KAMEELDRIFT, PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA. Some 1,000 besieged
Afrikaner smallholders at Kameeldrift, northeast of Pretoria, said
during an emergency meeting at their local Dutch-Reformed Church they
are being targetted by genocidal attackers. During the meeting at the
overcrowded church, emotions ran so high that residents demanded that
the local police station commander superintendent Edwin Lelaka, who
was present, be removed from his post. This past year, the local
church had to set up a family trauma clinic to deal with the terror of
the surviving victims of all these attacks.

This weekend at the local Dutch-Reformed church, Kameeldrift's
residents sent a clear message to the police authorities, namely that
Lelaka and his police force are incompetent, don't even know how to
get around on the the smallholdings, and that they are failing to
protect them from rampaging, feral youth gangs. The gangs target the
Afrikaner smallholders for murders and rapes . The motion that the
police commander be replaced by a more competent police officer who
knows the area received 500 votes from the angry audience.

Local private crime-detective Mike Bolhuis said the person who was
really responsible for the plight of the Afrikaners in this
smallholder community is Director Jaco Botha, of the police's central
firearms register. "He's the one who made so many empty promises to us
at our last meeting four months ago that things would improve," he
said.

Recently it took a full hour and 45 minutes before the police showed
up at the scene of an armed house robbery... in spite of the gigantic
letters the community has put up on all their homesteads in May after
policemen claimed that they got lost because they couldn't find the
numbers of the plots... Resident Gerrit Klopper went around personally
to put up each giant number plate on the fencing of the rural

Kameeldrift -- and indeed all of the greater Pretoria/Brits
smallholdings regions where Afrikaner families have been living for
many decades - are being hit by a wave of extremely violent attacks
during families are targetted inside their (high-security) homes for

This past month's atrocities however made the Kameeldrift residents
reach breaking point -- a virginal 16-year-old Afrikaans teen was
raped while her family had to listen helplessly; a popular local
teacher, Rudi Roach of Zwartkops Afrikaans high school, was murdered,
42-year old father of two, chemist Marius MacDonald was shot execution-
style in front of his family - and these are regular occurrances. In
May, the Maree family escaped with their lives after fighting off a
large armed gang with just their bare hands and sheer determination
and courage... the horror stories just keep mounting.

family clinic where a clinical psychologist, social worker and family
lawyer also are employed to help deal with trauma-victims of such

And it's not only at the Kameeldrift smallholdings were Afrikaner

Sunday emergency meeting that it's now it's entirely left up to the
community to do all the policing, the cops just 'shrug us off'.

"We want to cooperate with the police but we are getting no legal
punch during our crime-fighting efforts. After we've worked all day to
put food on the table, we have to ride patrols at nights."We get no
help, and the police force moreover, doesn't even know this area and
so they can't find us fast enough, they claim,' she told the meeting.
