IRGINIA BEACH — A circuit court judge on Monday largely rejected an
appeal by prosecutors who wanted to lock up a Navy commando charged
with murder.

Judge Stephen C. Mahan declined to revoke bail or even increase the
bond amount set earlier this month for Petty Officer 1st Class Ronald
J. Gasper.

Gasper is charged with first-degree murder, accused of killing fellow
commando Bradley A. Jondahl on July 31 . Gasper called 911 to report
that he had shot an intruder, but court documents show that he later
admitted he knew his victim, who died at a hospital.

At the court hearing Monday, a homicide detective assigned to the case
said that Gasper confessed to shooting Jondahl after the pair had been
drinking.

But in testimony for the defense, Gasper’s father said that he and a
private investigator found evidence – a second bullet casing – that
was missed by police at the crime scene .

Both sides presented conflicting evidence about whether Gasper
appeared injured after the shooting, a possible indic...

The Navy has acknowledged that vessels on maneuver off Hawaii last
month used their sonar periodically in the 20 hours before a large pod
of melon-headed whales unexpectedly came to shore in the area. The
acknowledgment added to an already contentious debate over whether the
sound from sonar has been causing marine mammals to strand.

Navy officials said that a review of the July 3 incident indicates
that two ships turned on their sonar between 6:45 and 7:10 a.m., by
most accounts just before the unusual movement of almost 200
deep-water whales to the shoreline of a Kauai bay. The Navy had said
earlier that no sonar was used until more than 90 minutes later, well
after the animals came ashore.
