(EXCERPT) In one of the largest sliding ship-style launches ever in
the United States, the National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. on Friday
night launched the USNS Watkins, a 950-foot-long, 105-foot-wide U.S.
Navy strategic sealift ship that will be used to hold a military cargo
of tanks and vehicles pre-positioned in potential trouble spots around
the world.

Thousands of NASSCO employees and spectators watched the massive ship
slide down its wooden ramp and into San Diego harbor at Friday night's
ceremony, held at high tide so the 62,700-ton displacement ship would
not hit the bottom of the harbor.

As for the Navy, going with existing designs and implemeting is one area, as
is refurbishing stuff that has sat around. It would be a balance between
those two areas. Some can be fixed up, some probably cannot or would not be
worth it in comparison to buying new stuff.

Do you want defense or worldwide projection? For defense, Naval strike
bombers, Subs, and other stuff are good ideas.
