Hi,

I am looking for a table that will give an idea of ingested and
generated particles in a hydraulic system.

Idealy, the table should give an estimate of number of particle by size
for each given type of componants (generated) and about the same thing
for the ingested particles.

Please email me if some of you know where can I find it on the Web.

Regards,

Richard Vallee

Just an idle factoid:  A portion of the SR-71 fleet was built with folding
outer wing panels.  All had tail hooks.

Brazil has one of the Colossus class.  She's used for ASW.Spain has one.
Italy has one.
Thailand has one.  She was build in Spain to the same design as the
Spanish ship.
India has two, one that are operational.
Australia's carriers were retired years ago.  The Sydney in the 70's, and
the Melbourne in the early 80's.
Argentina's last carrier hasn't been to sea since the late 80's.  She's in
the middle of a overhaul that looks like will never end.  The other
carrier was retired in the 70's.
Ukraine's carrier is incomplete.  Unless someone else buys her, and pays
to finish her, she will stay that way.
Canada had one, the Bonaventure, that was retired in the late 60's.

That's all I can remember off the top of my head right now.  I can look up
the information tonight when I get home to my books.

Subject: RFD Un-moderated group alt.sailing.tall-ships

Comments would be welcome please. Thanks - Chris Brady.

        Re: Un-moderated group alt.sailing.tall-ships
        =============================================

Topics about Tall Ships, their history, operation and programmes
    ================================================================

RATIONALE: alt.sailing.tall-ships

Currently there is no newsgroup for the discussion of Tall Ships and
related issues. The current lack of a newsgroup specifically for Tall
Ships forces the discussions to be held in alternative newsgroups, none
of which is completely appropriate for the topic. Also spreading the
topic over several newsgroups discourages active discussion and makes it
difficult to find what discussion there is. The proposed newsgroup would
provide a single home for the existing interest while vastly expanding
the potential audience and the range of topics.

There are many hundreds of web sites on the Internet devoted to tall
ships and marine history. However very few - if any - offer the
opportunity for public discussion. And the Tall Ships mailing list ceased
long ago.

At present there are just two private forums for Tall Ship enthusiasts:
the Sailing - Tall Ships conference, and the Astrid-Brig conference, both
on CIX (UK). There may be something on America Online.

So whilst the interest in tall ships gathers momentum throughout the
world there are no opportunities to discuss them on the Internet. It has
been estimated that at recent Tall Ship gatherings for the International
Cutty Sark Races, over a million spectators viewed the 'Parades of Sail'
so the demand is there.

More than one Captain of these vessels have been reported to have
indicated an interest in a newsgroup dedicated to Tall Ships. They would
like to have a forum where all officers, mates, crew, and people with
interest in Tall Ships, history, sail training, and charter programmes
could congregate and discuss the issues pertinent to the running of such
vessels.

Topics can include: various sail training program ideas, sailing
techniques both square rigged and fore & aft, queries and answers
concerning sources for equipment, supplies, mooring facilities,
discussions of youth programmes, programmes for the disabled, basic sail
training program schedules, discussions of what equipment trainees ought
to bring with them on a voyage, shipyard facilities, ship wright skills,
experiences and reports of voyages, the international Cutty Sark races,
and many more related topics.

CHARTER: alt.sailing.tall-ships

alt.sailing.tall-ships is for the open discussion of all issues relating
to the Tall Ships of the world.

The definition of Tall Ships is somewhat loose and includes sailing
vessels ranging from two masted schooners to full rigged ships of two,
three, or four masts. Tall Ship missions are generally in the class of
history, sail training programs, charter, and static display. Not
included in the definition of Tall Ships are various small pleasure
yachts, sailing
dinghies or racing craft (e.g. catamarans).

The discussion may include, but is in no way limited to, Tall Ship
history, operations, programmes and events, upkeep & maintenance, and
voyage reports. This list is not meant to be inclusive, it is simply
meant to give an idea of the type of traffic expected in the group. For
the purposes of this group a Tall Ship is a traditionally rigged and
operated sailing
vessel engaged in historical, sail-training, research, or "windjammer"
charter operations, including stationary museum ships and vessels no
longer in existence.

This group is not to be used for the discussion of issues common to
general recreational boating nor to commercial shipping. All issues
should be specifically and primarily of interest to the Tall Ships
community.

Commercial posts and advertising are not appropriate for this group, with
the following exceptions:

* individuals seeking to buy or sell books, magazines, collector's items,
memorabilia, etc. about Tall Ships are permitted,

* announcements of commercial or semi-commercial web sites and other
resources are permitted,

* the seeking of crew for voyages whether professional or paying are
permitted,

* listing of programmes or schedules of Tall Ships would be permitted,

* announcements seeking Tall Ship maintenance and repair facilities would
be permitted

All such commercial or advertising posts should be brief, should not be
posted repeatedly and must be clearly related to the topics the group is
meant to discuss. Frequent re-posting of the same or similar articles is
specifically prohibited.

Binary and encoded posts of any sort are prohibited. These will be
provided for in:
alt.binaries.pictures.tall-ships

END CHARTER.

Ummm, if you're talking about the nuke _plant_, then whatever befell
the Scorpion happened _far away_ from the nuclear plant. No
connection.

FWIW, everything I ever saw or heard of on the Scorpion talked about
possible battery explosions, torpedo hot runs/explosions and,
whispered on midwatches, sinking by Soviet torpedo.

The hole is supposed to be in the Torpedo Room/Battery Well area and
goes through the hull. Most people say that it is blown out. A few say
it is blown in. I believe the former, myself.

I worked on The Skipjack, Scamp and Jack in the late 70's. During the late
70's the Navy was still testing systems on these boats to try and figure out
what happened to the Scorpian and Thresher. We spent many months changing
out systems, plates, bulkheads, valves, etc. to try and duplicate specific
scenarios. I don't believe anyone ever came up with a theory that could be
duplicated.

As for the comments by someone earlier about EB's poor quality, you need to
work around a new boat under construction. There are Navy inspectors to
inspect the Navy inspectors to inspect the Navy inspectors. And this is in
addition to the shipyard inspectors. If a boat left without meeting
requirements, both parties would be at fault!

You're the disgrace here - that article contained virtually nothing in the
way of facts, was filled with unproven opinions and suggestion,
fourth-hand rumors, conspiracy theories, and the like.  Everyone who
actually knows anything about SCORPION and/or the US submarine force has
loudly denounced that piece of gutter journalism.  I could write an
equally valid (read: totally invalid) article blaming MISSOURI's grounding
on the SUBSAFE program, but that wouldn't make it so.

Particularly relevant is a letter on p.8 of this month's PROCEEDINGS,
written by someone who served aboard SCORPION for 54 months just prior to
her loss; I suspect he knows far more about her condition than you, the
author of the previous article, or anyone here...
