Some of the Greek vs. Persian stuff must have been pretty nasty,
especially when ships were loaded with troops. Armor is no fun if you

firing angles on Alabama:
1. Emergency gear to move the rudder independent of the rudder post.
2. Changing heading by adjusting sails

How far forward or aft could Kearsage fire with steering sails?
Nobody like setting fire to their own sails.
Rigging a jury rudder is hard enough with an enemy pouring shot into
your stern where you are trying to rig it.
Having Kearsage underway would cause no problems for Alabama to
maneuver to keep on her stern firing the entire time.
