James Cameron’s Avatar to hit nation’s 3D screens
Nov 2, 2009
Ho Chi Minh City — Vietnamese fans are in for a new cinematic
experience with the screening of James Cameron’s science-fiction
epic Avatar this month at the country’s first ever 3D cinemas in
Ho Chi Minh City and Ha Noi.
Avatar takes viewers to the 22nd century on a small moon called
Pandora, home of the Na’vi blue humanoids.
A paralysed Marine named Jake Sully volunteers to exist as an
Avatar, a combination of human and Na’vi, on Pandora.
He falls in love with the Na’vi princess and gets caught up in the
conflict between her people and the human military that is consuming
their world.
The US$200 million film’s producer 20th Century Fox organised an
Avatar Day screening of a 15-minute trailer and footage of the movie
in North America and other countries on August 21.
Vietnamese audiences were able to enjoy the trailer at the Megastar
Hung Vuong Plaza’s 3D cinema in HCM City on Friday. Trailers of 3D
films from Walt Disney like Alice in Wonderland directed by Mia
Wasikowska, Tron Legacy directed by Joseph Kosinski, and animation
films – Toy Story, Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3 were also presented
at the show.
The 15-minute trailer will be screened every Thursday at the city’s
Megastar Hung Vuong Plaza and Ha Noi’s Megastar VinCom City Towers
from November 12 to December 10.
The full-length feature film will be released in Viet Nam on
December 18, the same day as in the US.
Megastar will release a 3D movie every month next year, said Su Lee,
general manager of Megastar Distribution.
He did not say how much the ticket for a 3D movie would cost, but
said it would be "very affordable".
At the end of this month, Megastar will also introduce a completely
new 2D-digital version along with the 2D version of the Summit
Entertainment blockbuster New Moon directed by Chris Weitz. The film
will be released on November 27.
Megastar Media Company, a joint venture between the UK’s Envoy Media
Partners Limited and Phuong Nam Culture Corporation, has seven
world-class cinema complexes with 53 modern cinemas in Ha Noi, Hai
Phong, Da Nang, HCM City and Bien Hoa city. — VNS
