It seems the old ship is brewing a fresh controversy. the old Boston Naval Shipyard in the Charlestown neighbor of Boston has been converted to condos and appartments many containing yuppies and other undesirables. Well some of these folks are upset because Old Ironsides fires two single gun salutes daily to entertain the tourists who flock to the ship. they have complained to the city that this must stop. the fact the ship has been moored there since the 19th century and the salutes have been going on for decades, well predating the yuppification of Charlestown, formerly the long time home of Irish gangsters and armored car robbers. This a classic example of the move next to an airport and then complain about the airplanes syndrome. hopefully they will tell the yuppie scum to go pound sand, but instead I fear the squeaky wheel will get the grease. and its not like these salutes are at dawn when folks are sleeping, they are around midday.
The Constitution and neaby Bunker Hill bring in a lot of tourist dollars to Charlestown ., dollars that led to the revival of the neighborhood and which ironically led to the yuppiescum moving in.

When I lived next a golf course, very high class, they fired a shot to start their tournaments and a really nauseous horn for lightning.

Lightning is a hazard for golfers, you are carrying a pile of metal and you're plugged into the ground with those spikes. and You live in Fla don't you? that is the lightning capital of the world.
also did you move nbext to the course or did they build it next to your home? if the former then all I can say is buyer beware.

It was there long before the house was built and we bought it with the knowledge of the cannon. What wasn't made evident was the language of the golfers. Daughter was 8 when we moved in, learned some new words fairly soon.

Particularly when they see their golf ball at the bottom of your swimming pool, or lying at the feet of the Rottweiler you've staked out in the middle of the back yard. ;-)

There was a small grove of trees between our house and the fairway/ green. Many of the more untrained ended up there, usually behind a tree. I have seen a guy try to bank a shot off my house to get around those trees. Used to pick up a golf ball a week in my yard. Neighbor was next to the driving range, he could fill a trash bucket with balls every week.

Screw 'em. Maybe the crew needs to "accidentally" load some roundshot and point the cannon...accidentally of course...towards the condos.

I'm with you. However, the cannon is not an 18th century round shot cannon, it is a disguised 20th century saluting battery, and probably can't fire any kind of projectile.

I'm sure the Royal Armouries museum at Fort Nelson could arrange to lend them a functioning example :)

The 24lb guns on the Constitution are capable of firing if they so chose

Yeah, but explaining an accidental broadside might be stretching things a bit :-)

Yeah, but explaining an accidental broadside might be stretching things a bit :-)
the only things it could hit is its own museum or a restaurant. the Condos and apts are on the other side of the museum and the restaurant likes the tourists.

Don't they bring it out and turn it around once a year? Work with me here :-)

the opposite battery would shot the museum and restaurant.
if you go to google earth/maps and search Charlestowm Boston Mass you can see her in her berth. there is a Fltcher DD with it.

I've been there. If we're going with the fantasy of the Constitution lobbing some roundshot at the condos, we have to make some allowances.

When I was a teenager, I spent part of one summer as caddy at a local country club. Between caddy jobs, we would scout the fringes of the course for lost balls---generally finding a couple each day. They were turned in to the driving range for about a quarter each. Your neighbor or his kids might have a lucrative sideline---perhaps enough to pay for the polycarbonate storm windows! ;-)

Too bad there's not a gun ketch at the museum. Everyone from Beirut to Kabul knows that a mortar is the proper tool for cowing complaining civilians. ;-)
