Thanks for pointing out your level of intelligence.  Reread my

Assunto: Kimball Notes 3/1

Kimball writes this week that "the Tyson-King feud is at a
standstill." King's fraud trial starts March 17th, and Tyson "is not on
the witness list." Is it "honor among thieves"? Kimball doesn't think
so- the problem is, they could BOTH "drop a dime" on each other? Tyson
could help put King away, but King could file assault charges. (Due to
the "Bel Air slap-around" last month, which "could be construed as a
violation of Tyson's parole"?)

Is this the reason that a predicted news conference announcing a
Tyson lawsuit vs. King didn't happen? Does Tyson intend to sue to
recover any of the "estimated $45 million" King has allegedly bilked him
out of since his release from prison? It could and probably will happen.
Kimball says Tyson will sue King for fraud- "including the fact that
King, John Horne and Rory Holloway skimmed 40% from Tyson's purses even
AFTER collecting millions in promotional fees"! "Tyson probably doesn't
expect to collect"- but this will be his escape from King?

As far as Shelly Finkel becoming Tyson's new "adviser": What does
Finkel expect to gain? Is "providing Tyson with reputable management at
this point akin to changing jockeys on a dead horse"? No, says Finkel.
"I really think he can become champion again"! "Mike says he understands
what has gone wrong, and he says he wants to change it. That's a start"!

The "new working date" for ODLH-Patrick Charpentier is June 13th in
Atlantic City. Who will he face in September? Yory Boy Campas is the
frontrunner, but "should either this week's Chavez-Gonzalez fight or the
April 25th Ike Quartey-Pernell Whitaker produce a home run", one of
those winners could be his next opponent. Because of ODLH's wrist
injury, the March 14th HBO card is now in Atlantic City, with Keith
Mullings-David Ciarlante and Vince Phillips-Alfonso Sanchez scheduled.

We still have the "Oscar vs. the Oscars" show on March 23rd on the
regualr Fox network at Foxwoods Casino. Bouts scheduled include Campas-
Anthony Stephens, Dana Rosenblatt-Terry Ford, Butterbean-Benjie Baker,
Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Casillas and Lucia Rijker-Mary Ann Almager.

Wilfredo Vazquez, Hector Lizaragga and Kennedy McKinney "all remain
in the running as Prince Naseem Hamed's April 18th HBO opponent." Carl
Thompson and Chris Eubank will also fight as cruiserweights- "But not on
HBO," says Lou DiBella.

Andrew Golota *is* scheduled to return to the ring on April 14th on
USA TNF at Foxwoods. (But, no mention of his opponent!) Fernando Vargas-
Romallis Ellis is also scheduled.

Yes, I've seen Booze and the previous name mentioned here on RSB.
But I *haven't* seen it anywhere in the media. Kimbell didn't mention
it, and I saw the post quoting Ron Borges' latest column, pointing out
that he didn't know, either. Are they *both* slipping in their sources?

I lost a beer when Richie almost deposited your head in the third row.
So much for my predictions.  I know an advertiser that wants to take out
an ad on the bottom of your shoes.

Since I'm promoting him now, I'll pose the question to him this week.
I'll give you some good advance notice -- maybe a week.  That'll give
you plenty of time to train.

Regards,
Jim
P.S.
For all those reading this -- John was a very good heavyweight...except
for this one time...

Jim,
Did you ever do any boxing? Just interested in knowing where you came
from. Some people can write about it, usually the smart ones that realize you
can get hurt getting hit. I was always appalled by the old boxers that had
suffered pugilistica dementia and had a hard time putting one word ahead of
the other. I think that Jerry Quarry is in that catagory. Do you like the
heavyweights or the lightweights? Where did  you get your knowledge of
boxing? They say that those that can do and the others either teach or write
about it.

Very briefly (because it's 31 yrs):
• Successful amateur career in the late '60s
• Coached thru the '70s
• President of am boxing in NY thru mid '80s + coach/manager of US & NY
am team internationally
• Primary timekeeper at MSG and many other places (for pro stuff) thru
'90s
• Make my living as a pro promoter for club shows in NY

In addition to that, I write about it.  Usually just enough to get me in
trouble by my friends who read this but can't put one word in front of
the other (hear that guys?).  I was fortunate enough to shove a college
career in there and earn a few degrees.

I know that there are many fighters who go on to very successful careers
where the quality of their brains is unquestioned.  You're almost
insinuating that there is brain damage for all who go on to pro
careers.  The most brilliant man that I've personally met in the field
of boxing is a fellow that was the former Lt Heavyweight champ, Jose
Torres.  I'm 50 years old now, and one who's supposed to know the game
fairly well by now and feel a mere pup compared to the knowledge and
philosophies of this man.  If that's brain damage, set me up for my
share!

>Do you like the
> heavyweights or the lightweights?

Never really answered that question.  I've seen most of today's top
fighters from the prospective of the timekeeper's seat.  I can say that
I probably like them all for their different qualities.  I can say that
I've been thrilled by extraordinary talents in every weightclass.  I've
been knocked down by the unbelievable proficiency and classic style of
Ricardo Lopez.  I've been amazed at the competitivness at the light &
featherweight level - rang the bell for Gatti/Patterson I,
Gatti/Rodriguez and Hamed/Kelley.  I've appreciated the dynamics of the
4 major welters (ODH, Pea, Ike and Tito - in no particular order).  I've
been left with my mouth open by the incredible talent of RJJ,
particularly when he made the likes of Merqui and Montell look like bums
when they're extraordinary talents in their own right.  But there is no
other group to generate electricity in the arena like the big boys.
It's impossible to explain the atmosphere during a HW night.  With
Evander, Lennox, Mercer, Whitherspoon, Bowe/Golota I (that was my most
frightening experience - I became the only timekeeper stopped on a cut)
in the house, the place becomes something else.

>They say that those that can do and the others either teach or write
> about it.

I do DO.  To relax, I write about it and argue with other people about
it.

Regards,
Jim

Jim,
Sounds good. I also enjoy all the different weight classes for the same
reasons. I particularly enjoyed the Bowe birdman fight when the guy comes down
and lands on the ropes. He was pulled off and beaten by bystanders. I too had a
very successful amateur career and was started at a very young age. My father was
a semipro and had me with gloves on about the time I could walk. He would get on
his knees and work with me and started me on roadwork very soon.
When I started 9th grade I joined a boxing team (highschool) and competed
all over the area. Most of the schools had teams and competed just like football
or basketball. We probably had 10 guys boxing during my 1st year and I had a 1-5
record. I was beaten by a senior who in the 2nd round knocked my mouthpiece out
to the 3rd row of ringside seats. I was hard headed and couldn't be hurt, but I
lost that one by decision.
My sophmore year I lost two fights to the same left hander, both close
fights and won 8. In my junior and senior year I did not loose and found it hard
to get fights. I would wait until the last minuite to weigh in and even though I
was a middleweight I would weigh in with my clothes on and go to light heavy for
the better competition.
I completed my senior year as the only fighter to represent my school and
went undefeated for all my fights.
During the tournaments you might have to fight three or more times to win the
tournament. There were about 10 tournaments plus the local golden gloves and
shows put on by the local boys club. It was a great time to be boxing.
On Friday nights they had the Friday night fights where I marveled at the
skills of Carmen Basilio, Kid Gavalan, Gene Fulmer, Sugar Ray Robinson, and all
the other greats of the day. My uncle, father and brothers would always watch
them and they were backed by Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer. It sure is good to go back
to those days and remember to good times I enjoyed with my family and there was
always good boxing.
I went to college on a partial scholarship for football and boxing. In my
freshman year I won the Abilene Middleweight golden gloves tournament and
qualified for the Texas State tournament. I went to Ft. Worth and won my first
fight, but in the quarterfinals I lost by a double TKO (they declared both of us
unable to continue the bout in the 3rd round). My opponent went on to win state
and then went to Chicago to the nationals and got beat in the finals by a cut.
I transferred to another school the following year and pretty much got out
of boxing. I decided that I was wasting my fathers money and my time and I joined
the Navy where I became a medic and spent 23 years in the Naval service where I
spent time in Vietnam with the marine corps and much time on board ship (Iwo
Jima)
off the coast of Vietman as the war was winding down. We were the 1st medical
unit for casualties out of Nam
and triaged wounded and sent them either to the hospital ships or back to the
states.
I wasn't implying that all old boxers had the malady. I said the ones that I
talked to that did. We had 3 or 4 guys that had boxed in Wichita Falls who had
suffered that fate and They were the ones who made me decide not to continue
boxing as a professional. I just didn't want to end up like that.
In the Navy I graduated from George Washington School of Medicine, Health
Sciences Division and hold a BS from Midwestern state University. I think I did
the right thing, of course I still love boxing and feel that having an insiders
view understand the intricacies of the sport that many don't. I think that boxing
is an artform and just as important as painting or ballet. I didn't mean to be
long winded, but hey we all get on our soapbox
occasionally.
Walt

Chee; your answer starts of good then you attack me by saying that i reporting
nobodies.  Im not a reporter im a person haveing a disscusion.  I asked the
question to see how people feel... you know not to long ago back in the day the
night ended with a heavyweight bang.  I was just asking to see what others
thought.

Chee; i asked this one to see if people though boxing was at a high or low
point... if it was getting bigger or smaller.  I know boxing will be here long

boxing.

Chee : listen Peter i learned of Carbahal threw the usenet not the National
enquire. Frankely if you dont care , dont answer.  You relize some of us do.  I
dont want my childs role model to be a cop beater, because someone who is
willing to beat a cop is willing to beat anyone.  I know people say boxers
arent role models well thats bull, since many boxers start of as kids watching
greats like Ali or louis , marciano.  I would much rather have my kid Admire
and respect Holyfield and his life stlye as opposed to tysons.

I was only asking questions Pete ... slow down maybe your a reporter but im not
and therefore was only trying talk with others on subject that may intrest
them.
