Subject: Talkin' Tuesday: Pedro Fernandez
    Date: Mon, 29 Dec 1997

It seems the 6,500 seat Caesars Palace Sports Pavilion will not be
available
for Oscar De La Hoya's cakewalk with Patrick Charpentier on February
28.
Caesars Sports boss Rich Rose said the arena which hosted
Holmes-Norton,
and Sanchez-Gomez, just to name a couple of epic lashes will be torn
down
in 1998 and Rose is hoping to have a great card to close the
Pavilion before it
meets the wrecking ball. With all the other Vegas venues booked, Top
Rank
promoter Bob Arum (Master Bob is how the great Malcolm "Flash"
Gordon
used to describe him) will take the fight to San Antonio. Yori Boy
Campas
will defend the IBF 154 lb. belt underneath against #1 Anthony
Stephens.
Should Campas and Oscar win, the pair would meet at 147 lbs. in
June.
Campas hasn't fought at '47 in a couple of years, and surely the
loss in weight
will hurt any chances Yori Boy has against Daddy's Boy. After that,
it's
supposed to be Oscar vs the winner of the WBA title bout between Ike
Quartey and Pernell Whitaker set for the Spring. The forced weight
limit of
147 lbs. for Campas just shows the lack of true intestinal fortitude
of Daddy's
Boy. He must have every advantage. I hope Quartey kills him. And
don't
even mention Trinidad and Oscar. IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN!! Trinidad
has every advantage. Ability/skill, power, height, reach, and he's
younger!
And hey, I didn't always feel this way about Daddy's Boy. I was his
publicist
for a year when he was an amateur sponsored by building tycoon Carl
Dame'... Montell Griffin bested Jaime Castaneda Friday night in Las
Vegas
on the BAM Promotions card held at the Orleans Hotel when referee
Richard
Steele stopped it at 2:48 of the eighth. Griffin is now 28-1. A
womens fight
between Hannah Fox and Hide Tibe had the sold out crowd of 1,400 on
their
feet for a four round slugfest, which was won by Fox, a Subway
Sandwich
shop owner in Las Vegas. One man yelled at Montell Griffin when he
was
returning to the dressing room. "You should be ashamed. The women
put on
a much better show than you." Ouch! Lennox Lewis will defend his WBC
heavyweight title against Buster "The Dog" Douglas in the early part
of '98.
Don't get me started on Buster, he's a..........And besides all
that, he doesn't
deserve it. Arum says it will be a Top Rank promotion. Arum hasn't
had a
good heavyweight since.......Ali!!..FACT OR FICTION: IS Mike Marley,
the recently ousted PR guy for Don King going to sign up with Magic
Johnson? And is boxing promoter Harold Smith dead? Rumors persist
that
Smith, AKA Ross Fields, the man who spent five years in the pokey
for
embezzling the money to promote world title cards in the early 80's,
took ill
and suddenly died. A 10 count for Harold, who was always a good, no,
a
great guy to me..LA Forum publicist John Beyrooty kept being told by
Forum
Boxing boss John Jackson that he wasn't getting to the office early
enough.
Beyrooty didn't take double J seriously enough as Johnny...@aol.com
was
recently released from the Dr. Jerry Buss crew. The former columnist
for the
Los Angeles Herald is a great guy and an excellent PR man and would
be an
ideal candidate for the opening at Don King Productions with the
recently
forced resignation of Mike Marley..IBF-WBO 115 lb. champ Johnny
Tapia
returns home to Albuquerque in February with what figures to be his
last 115
lb. fight, or his first at bantamweight (118) World & IBF
middleweight champ
Bernard Hopkins is away at camp prepping for his January 31, HBO
date
against Simon Brown. 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist David Reid will also
make an appearance..I am going to push for Ed Brophy of the
International
Boxing Hall of Fame to induct California referee Chuck Hassett and
promoter
Don Chargin into the Canasota, NY shrine. Haseet has done 110 WBC or
WBA title fights, all in an exemplary manner. He is also one of the
referee's
who organize seminars for the NABF and the WBC. Chargin has been
promoting world class talent since the 1950's, and was the
matchmaker for
the weekly fight cards from the famed Olympic Auditorium in days
gone by.
Another inductee should be the late Las Vegas gym owner Johnny
Tocco.
The first and last trainer of Sonny Liston, Johnny was a fixture on
the Vegas
boxing scene since 1952...This Saturday night at 11 PM ET Ring Talk
can be
heard live on the Net at www.talkamerica.com. My guests will include
World
140 lb. champ "Cool" Vince Phillips, boxing manager/genius Rafael
Mendoza
of Mexico and Las Vegas's Hannah Fox, a Las Vegas fighter who stole
the
show last week on the BAM card from the Orleans Hotel in Sin City.

Later this week............Pedro's Year End Awards!

I suppose since I am the one who turned you on to Pedro's site, I should
be the one responsible for the mouth to mouth.  And I do so with
complete disregard for my own well being. ;->

Always searching for sources of boxing pictures, posed or action, amateur or
professional, kickboxing in jpg, gif, or zip format.  If you could send me any
good pictures via email or internet sources, I would appreciate it and would
possibly send back some from my collection.   White collar boxing is another
source I would like to have.

On my site I have an old boxing/wrestling program available. I scanned in
the non-ad pages and made them available at...

http://www.lh.net/client/magus/submissions.html

They are available on either version of the site.

BTW...the adult section has a link list under ASFW. It includes links on
boxing sorted by catagory of interest.

You go ahead. Bet the kids' college fund. Just don't cry afterwards.
Douglas doesn't stand the shadow of a chance.

Paul-
When I saw that Monaco fight,it sure looked to me like
it was the same old Buster. The "New" Buster is the same as
the "Old" Buster.Scratch the surface and dig deep.......and
you won't find a heart. If this fight takes place, look for Buster
to give his usual Half A** effort like he always has when he's
dealt a big hand to play.Other than one night in Toyko,he's
never missed a chance to let us down.

Its amazing how an actor can get people to see him as a god.  Ive met
many Lee worshipers and it is ridiculus.  I dont know about street
fighting butfor someone to say Lee could beat a world class boxer in
boxing is ridiculus.

In a boxing match Holy destroys Lee. In a NHB fight who knows.

Dave, I hear what you're saying. I didn't mean to say there won't be
good fights ahead on HBO, TNF, and others ... I guess what I'm sad
about is the lunacy at the top. I'm talking about fights I really,
really want to see ... fights that bring hype and hoopla, that creat a
circus and air of drooling anticipation. The Holyfield/Tyson stuff was
a lot of fun, it generated newspaper interest and talk around the
water fountain.

Yes, there are some great young guns coming up, and I love to watch
them and I'm looking forward to see who steps up this year.

I'm again disappointed by idiots like Don King, though, who want to
offer us nothing but crapola at the supposed top end.

I love the weeks of anticipation and the big ppv party where everyone
comes over and gathers 'round the tv for the MAIN EVENT ... etc.

That's what I meant. I'm not going to buy Holyfield/Bean and I'm
certainly not interested in seeing Lewis beat up Buster Douglas, if
you know what I mean.

That's all.

I am looking forward to some fun fights at the HBO level, and I agree,
now is the year we could see someone really step forward. That's what
I meant about Tua, who generally offers a fun fight ... I mean, to
heck with Douglas, let's see Lewis fight Tua, or Holyfield fight Tua
instead of Bean. Or lets see one of them fight Grant, or Izon, or
someone else entertaining.

Anyway,

Chase

Chase-
I couldn't agree more on the desire to NOT see someone like
Blubber Douglas in a PPV. While the Young Guns certainly are
not PPV material yet,you never know, maybe in a few years(maybe
sooner than you expect)a Michael Grant might be a big enough
draw that he'll reach that Marquee level. It takes awhile to reach
the zenith level of stardom......I remember in his early stages at
HW,not too many people would have ever thought that Little
Cruiserweight Evander Holyfield would ever  be a PPV draw at
HW.It's hard to predict down the road.
