Everybody around here was saying it was Boone's big chance, and they were all dumping on me for saying it was the end of the road for him. Of course it WAS the end of the road. George whacked him out in 2 and Boone retired. He never had any defense anyway, just a big punch, a big heart, and a terrific chin. The only knock against Elorde was that he did not move up in weight to fight Carlos Ortiz or move down in weight to fight Sandy Saddler, I find it kind of nitpicking...why fight at a uncomfortable weight? Also he defended the title almost exclusivly in the Phillipines. Hope this helps. Keep Punching É necessário Acessar antes de postar mensagens.

[This followup was posted to rec.sport.boxing and a copy was sent to the In article <5k824o$...@sjx-ixn7.ix.netcom.com>, ev...@ix.netcom.com > Does anybody know this great fighter?...what was his record? Gabriel (Flash) Elorde was from the Philippines and he began his professional career June 16, 1951. He was champion of the Orient from bantam to lightweight. He fought Sandy Saddler for the World Featherweight crown, Carlos Ortiz for the World Lightweight Crown, and won the World Junior Lightweight crown from Harold Gomes. The Saddler fight 1/18/56 in San Francisco was a foul fest as Saddler was booed throughout the fight for butting, holding, and hitting on the break. Elorde was stopped at 59 seconds of the 13th due to a nasty cut above his left eye. Saddler was leading on all cards. On 3/16/60 Elorde won the title by Ko'ing Harold Gomes in the seventh round after knocking down the champ six times. The fight was in Quezon City, Philippines and was marked by riots before the fight due to a problem with oversold tickets. He defended the title against Gomes, Copeland, Bizarro, Allotey. He then Challenged Ortiz and was KO'd in the 14th on 2/15/64. He continued to defend his Junior Lightweight title against Kosaka (twice), Suh and Durada before finally losing to Yoshiaki Numata on 6/15/67 by decision. He then retired and made a comeback in 1969 but again retired after 9 bouts. He finished with a record of 88 wins (34 by KO), 2 draws, and 25 losses.
