Assunto: Bruno and Lewis, a question of smarts
I see many Bruno fans from the UK (I live there too), decrying
Lewis, and his lack of popularity among Brits. Well, Can I just
step in here, and say that among black brits, Lewis is far more popular
than Bruno, will ever be. That is not to say that I am a Lewis fan,
(I like neither), but it is obvious that Bruno has gotten mainstream
popularity from playing village idiot. Lewis on the other hand presents
himself as am upstanding positive personality, who has a high profile in
his community (If you didn't know, you never will).

The irony of all this Lewis is not a true Brit talk, is that Greg Rusedski,
came over here with an even broader Canadian accent, and less links than
Lewis had with this country, and guess what. The Brit public embraced him
according to the media. Seems to me like the implicit statement is that
Lewis has too much confidence for his 'type'. Could learn a thing from
good ole Frank, know what I mean 'Arry. Now people can argue all they will
about this with me, but Bruno deserves his label, because he deliberately
marketed himself as this unintimidating, unchallenging everyone feel sorry
for me character. This endears him to a great deal of the non black populace,
whether they like the interpretation or not. For that very same reason, Frank
Bruno is seen (you tell me if that is right or wrong), as someone who has
basically sold his soul. On the other hand it projects an image which is that
if you ain't too bright, and make 'em laugh, you'll be popular.

I have no problem with Bruno, as he is successful in his own way, but as much
as I think Lewis is smarmy at times, he represents a much more positive
image than Bruno does, and he is yes a Brit like Bruno, no matter how you
perceive him. And all those expecting that a one dimensional fighter like
Bruno to change in his next fight against Tyson, I will point to the first
time Tyson hits Bruno with a solid punch next time, that will be the guide to
the story of Frank Bruno. Like everyhting else he prepares well, and does
well by script, but introduce anything that demands intuition, and he
flounders. Kinda like asking him a question about anything that doesn't
demand a joke. He still says know what I mean 'Arry.

Possibly a fair point, but most peope have no problem with it. As you
will be aware, a boxers career can be cut short with just a single
fight. There is, for a few, a 'very' good living to made as
'personality' and Frank will excel at this, Indeed, during his lay off
after the Tyson fight he made a small fortune doing panto, presenting
TV progs etc. It's easy to knock him for this but let's remember,
there's nothing wrong with earning a living and the TV folk will only
employ those who will draw the public in. Frank 'has' played up his
supposed 'thickness' to the hilt and nothing wrong with that. Indeed,
I think that Lewis's comments about Bounty Bars and Uncle Tom were, at
least a little, spawned from some jealousy at the affection the UK
public have for Bruno, in comparison to Lewis, who lets face it, the
general, non fight fan, oublic hardly know.
I've been lucky enough to meet Frank Bruno at the last two PBA dinners
and he certainly isn't the dim-witted clown that most people would
expect him to be. He does, admittedly, sometimes have problems
expressing his views eloquently, but so do many, myself included.

The problem with Lewis, outside boxing, is his lack of personality.
Its not anyone's fault but to draw in the Non fight fan, you have to
have that 'something'! Bruno, Benn, Eubank and Hamed have it.
Lewis, Collins and countless others don't. It doesn't make them worse
boxers but does limit their saleability as a 'personality'
BTW, have you ever noticed that Lewis always refers to himself in the
third person? Never I or me. eg, 'I think the time is right for Lennox
Lewis to etc.' Odd! Wonder what a shrink would say about that.

Bruno's an OK guy as far as I'm concerned. I've never met him, but one
little episode stands out in my mind:

About three years ago, when I was living in England, I went to see
Bruno fight......uh, who the hell DID he fight? It was some clown from
South Africa, whose name I can't recall (Bruno won easily). Anyway, after
the fight, my friend and I were leaving Wembley Arena, and we happened to
walk past the back entrance, and what did we see? There's Bruno, just
jumping into his car (which was a six or seven year old Mercedes, with a
personalized license plate which read "Bruno" as I recall) to drive home.
No entourage, no sycophantic aides, no nobody. Bruno just got in his car,
drove to the stadium, won a heavyweight fight, jumped in his car, and drove
himself home. Jesus, can you imagine any other major heavy being this
unpretentious?

No, no, no, I thought Frank was his last name.  Like Steve Frank or something.

Right on the first line, wrong on the second.  Let's see if I can get it
right;

The TNF fight was Rocky Gannon vs Thomas Tate.

The "loser" Hopkins KO'd in 24 seconds was Steve Frank.

There is a Frank Tate (I think he's Thomas Tate's brother?) who fights at
lightheavy, he lost to Virgil Hill at least once.

I thought Gannon looked *huge* compared to Tate.  The size and strength
difference won him the fight, IMHO, as Tate couldn't do enough to keep
Gannon off of him.

Just for the record, TIM BLAKE didn't say Hopkins fought Tate.  But
I'll admit that these quotes of quotes of quotes can get confused.
