This show was just a wee bit better than Saratoga. :)
It included the best 30 minute period of rock & roll I have seen in my life. That, of course, would be the Incident/Rosie/NYC Serenade segment. Words cannot describe how great it was. It is only a few hours later and it feels almost like I dreamed it. Serenade was arranged quite differently than the performances from 99-03. It was the full album arrangement, complete with Bruce on acoustic, a full string section, and Richard Blackwell on the bongo. It had all the nuance of the album version and it was stunning. The 99 version from NJ, which remains one of the best single performances I've ever seen, had more of a rock feel.
The entire performance of the album was off the charts good. Kitty's Back with a full horn section was blazing hot, as was E Street Shuffle. But it was the transition between Incident and Rosie, done flawlessly, that got the biggest reaction. I must have been with about 20 friends and everyone was high fiving and hugging in the first initial moments of Rosie. While I don't like to know what is coming, in this case, knowing the album would be performed in order created a build-up at the end of Incident that paid off in a big way with the opening explosive notes of Rosie. Bruce's performance during the album, and the entire show for that matter, was almost shocking that he can still perform at that level. It would be shocking at any age and he definitely seems to be appreciating it. He looked so happy and content throughout the night.
The band came out on fire and the crowd was lifted right along with it. Scorching versions of Seeds and Prove It, in particular. The crowd was incredibly loud. I promised I wouldn't complain about anything this weekend and in reality, there would be nothing to complain about tonight. Yes, Sunny Day following NYC Serenade was less than the desired choice but it's not like it wasn't entirely predictable and the crowd loved it. He quite frankly could have played Sunny Day 10 times in a row at that point and I still would have been happy. That's how fired up I was. Same thing with Glory Days. The crowd was so freakin' loud.
Human Touch, which is a personal fave, and I hadn't seen since 2000, was fantastic. Again, Bruce's performance was truly amazing. The end of the song rocked.
I hadn't seen Wrecking Ball and I thought it was much better live than listening on tape, though the crowd clearly didn't seem to get that one. I think it was the one song that sorta fell flat. There was a hilarious moment during Dancing. Some idiot pushed his way up for the sole purpose of jumping on stage. Well, even before security got to him, Jason (who is rather large) grabbed the guy from behind and yanked him off the stage (this was on the stage extension right in front of Patti), back into the pit and then security came and hustled him out of the building. The guy is actually probably lucky Jason did that because if he had taken three more steps onto the stage, he would have gotten his ass pummeled in front of 20,000 people. Security is not amused by people jumping on the stage that is for sure.
Nice guest appearance on Higher and Higher by Elvis Costello. Again, a truly amazing performance by Bruce and the whole band.
I don't think the band could perform any better than they did tonight. In comparison to something like last year's St. Louis show, we were talking about it afterwards, and this was a rather different experience. St. Louis had all those surprises, the unpredictability factor was incredible, and the show as a whole was more sustained from beginning to end but tonight definitely had bigger highs than any show I have seen in a long, long time.
A remarkable evening. And it ended with perhaps the most exciting words of the night, certainly a sentence I never expected to hear Bruce Springsteen utter in public...."thanks New York. We'll be back tomorrow night with The River!"

PS. If they don't release tonight's show, they are completely lost. And they should package it with tomorrow's nights show, and probably one show from each of the other 3 albums.

yeah, that would be the cherry on top of the frickin panderin cake alright. it ain't frickin astral weeks at the hollywood bowl, we're talkin here. jeez, twas a time the adjective desparate for a springsteen show was a positive thing. the "other band" tour and the seeger session tour, wrong headed or not, were some attempt at pursing notion of creative direction, fug even jay weinberg, tho wierd as well, was different. this playing the whole album thing, after high profile in the election campaign, the superbowl, bonaroo, sold out stadiums in europe, is just a desparate, and sadly successful, call to the monkeys to come dance, so as to not have these shows go have empty on the east coast, and keep the live legend legacy in tack. whole album, yeah play the whole working on a dream album with 8 frackin violins and and a decent sound system and dancing monkeys be damned. postal transmission over.

So was there a reason for such an ignorant post, other than to prove how consistently stupid one person can be?

If pandering = giving the fans what they want, then I agree with you.

Well, it worked for this dancing monkey!! Now, if he plays "Greetings", I'll have to pull out my dancing monkey suit one more time!!

The review is pretty much spot on. The performance of WIESS was transcendent and is tied with the stretch in Philly 4 where Bruce audibled Higher and Higher after BTR through Kitty's Back in the encores for my favorite concert moment. But where Philly 4 took off into the stratosphere late into the show, MSG last night kind of crashed and burned. Maybe Bruce put so much energy, effort and passion into WIESS that the rest of the show came as an afterthought to him, but the encores really sagged. Wrecking Ball into Bobby Jean was atrocious. And it was hilarious seeing all the half-hearted arm swaying during BJ. But WIESS was just so good that I would have paid the full ticket price just for that. Very interested to see how The River plays out tonight.

Cut Bruce some slack! He's only pandering to the fans in NYC, or the ones who can get there at a moment's notice!

The review is spot on. This show was an embarrassment of riches. Sure you can complain about a couple of choices, but that's what makes it special. Bruce is playing for everyone in the building, not just the folks that want WIESS complete. And besides, the highs were extremely high. The show was incredible. And on a personal note, I expect the River to be equally as special.

I just listened to the boot (stopped after the WIESS part)...and I am blown away by how great it sounded. I cannot imagine how it must have sounded and felt to have been there for that portion of the show. I just want to listen to that part of the show over and over. And after hearing NYC Serenade....I am almost more upset over missing that than Incident. Beautifully done. Amazing. And I feel this way just from listening to the boot.
This is pretty accurate as to how it played out. Everything after WIESS with the exception of Bus Stop and Higher and Higher was flat and was lacking. Wrecking Ball to open the encores was once of Bruce's worst choices ever. But I agree that WIESS was so killer, so transcendant, that the rest was gravy.

Hal's big ears and big nose was unmistakable as he pushed his way in the pit and placed his gangly arms on the riser near Patti.
Will you and your gang be pushing its way to the front of the pit again tonight as well Hal?
Don't know if he has some sort of cougar fetish going on or not, but all those "ladies" that you were hugging and high fiveing should be better looking if you are steping up to the cougar level and not the skanks in San Fernando valley that you date

no, it's not. astral weeks, one the most influential albums hadn't been played live in 40 years, err like ever. . contentder for the greatest side 2 opening combo of incident and rosalita, notwithstanding weiss is nowhere near the masterpiece of astral weeks, nowhere.

We were talking after both shows and if he had as good a business sense as he does stage presence, these album performances would be available for download. If he does not want to do the whole show, just make the album sets available.

Shit, I saw Van Morrison do Astral Weeks at the Hollywood Bowl and that was one of the more boring shows I've seen in years. Just so disappointing. To even put that in the same sentence after seeing the Wild, Innocent and the E-Street Shuffle is just absurd.

Yeah, the first night encores was just horrible (if you'd seen a lot of shows lately). Well played I suppose but it certainly didn't matter. I was all about 1974.
