Running this through GT's web interface (as well as the AJAX API) to
translate into Spanish gives the following result:
"La diabetes mellitus, la medicación ayuda elección de decisión: a
randomized trial."
Note how everything after the colon is left untranslated. Now, remove
the period at the end of the string:
"The diabetes mellitus medication choice decision aid: a randomized
trial"
GT translates the string more or less correctly:
"La diabetes mellitus, la medicación ayuda elección de decisión: un
ensayo aleatorio"
Any ideas what might be going on here? If I translate the original
string (with period) into French instead of Spanish, I get a
completely translated result. Furthermore, GT en->es seems to work
just fine for other strings that have a colon and end with a period:
"Monkeys are interesting: I like monkeys." -> "Los monos son
interesantes: Me gustan los monos."
However:
"Monkeys are interesting: a randomized trial." -> "Los monos son
interesantes: a randomized trial."
GT really doesn't seem to like the phrase "a randomized trial" when
followed by a period.

Did you clear your cache before the second time? This problem is
described in several dozen places (of the 3100+ messages). Usually it
is not described as well as you have, but I did document the solution
in "Solutions to 5 common GT problems", which was just a few days ago,
so it does look like you even checked out the topics on the opening
list of latest discussions.
It is not the actual phrase you used that is the problem. When the
problem happens, it is always the last sentence. (The ":" is taken as
a sentence terminator.) It will not happen the 2nd and subsequent
times that google translates the same input page (regardless of target
language), although it may appear so if your browser is serving a
cached copy of the translated page.
Thanks for the reply. I did look through the Group's archives as well
as at your "Solutions to 5 common..." post before posting, but I
didn't see anything about colons being misinterpreted as sentence
breaks. And clearing the browser cache does not address this problem-
GT must be caching something on their end. Unless I misunderstood your
solution... here's what I did-
1. Using the translate.google.com web interface (no bookmarklets, no
api, etc.), try translating the string from english to spanish.
2. Empty browser cache
3. Re-translate the same string from en to es. Same result and
behavior both times (i.e., everything between the colon and final
period being left untranslated).

Sorry, you are doing something different; I was passing a URL to the
translator, not blocks of text. I did find a reference somewhere to a
similar problem relating to doing it using the AJAX APIs. Apparently
(in the AJAX case) the reply is okay, but crlf pairs are then
improperly parsed into the blocks of text wrapped with the "Suggest a
better translation" spans.
My last message may not be clear. I am saying "Sorry", as in *I* made
a mistake (by misunderstanding what you had done), and not "Sorry" as
in "you are wrong again".
No worries, thanks for the reply but the original message was
clear. :-) I'm pretty sure that I'm trimming trailing line breaks and
other whitespace before translating, but I'll double check that.
