re-direct-your-google-registered-domain-to-any-other-url

I found setting-up URL redirection very difficult, because it was very confusing. but now that I know how it's done, I know that it is very easy.

The first things you need to know are:

When you registered your domain name with Google, you actually registered it with GoDaddy through Google, as cooperating companies. This affords you all the free GoogleApps perks, but the low-cost of GoDaddy's domain registration. Your GoogleApps can be used to manage emails, calendars, and a host of other web-based services for yourself and your partners/users, and/OR you can build a basic site using GoogleSites, or whatever. This is just a convenience. Sort of like a Google "Behind-the-Site" Manager.

But if you want greater customization, you must login to the GoDaddy domain manager. To do this, you need to find the Sign-in Name and Password for GoDaddy - WHICH IS NOT the same as your Google Login info.

URL redirection is a DNS setting that must be changed with GoDaddy, the host of your domain. It allows you to use your new, simple, easy-to-remember domain/URL (i.e. http://www.my_domain.com) to direct your visitors to any other URL of your choice. You might choose to do this if you have already built a site with another service provider, such as Apple's .Mac or MobileMe, your university, a free site such as Tripod or Geocities.... where the URL is quite long, and difficult to remember (i.e. http://www.tripod.com/my_name/index.html). These long URLs, on top of being hard to remember, are also very impersonal and un-impressive. It doesn't look very professional or polished, for instance, on a business card or a resume.

If this describes you, you may not want to RE-build your entire website with a new and confusing service provider, like Google. Using URL re-direction, you don't have to.

You should already know how to login to your domain-related GoogleApps. Go ahead and Login, then follow the following steps....

1. click on "Domain Settings" and then under it click "Domain Names"
Domain Settings > Domain names > Primary Domain : Advanced DNS Settings

2. click the blue underlined "Advanced DNS Settings" to find your GoDaddy Sign-in name and password.

3. takes you to ""Advanced DNS Settings" >> where you can click "sign in to DNS Console" which takes you directly to the GoDaddy Sign-in !!

4. Login to GoDaddy's console using the sign-in name and password you JUST FOUND
(this opens your "Domain Manager" where your Google-registered domain name is listed, with any other domain names you may also own with GoDaddy.)

5. click on your domain name (i.e. my_domain.com)
(this opens all settings and information regarding the DNS Settings of your domain.)

6. Look for a heading "Forwarding" and click under it on "not forwarding" to redirect to the URL of your choosing.

7. type in the desired URL, and select additional settings - then click "save"
(I chose forwarding type 302: Temporary, so that search engines will treat my domain name as the permanent and primary URL.)

DONE ... and DONE!!

(processing your new forwarding settings should take more than 5 minutes, but less than 30 minutes. resetting these changes, making any additional edits to the changes you just made, or testing these forwarding settings will require waiting for the process to complete. if you wanna be totally safe, just log out and return the next day.)
