WinAmp and .avi files

I am running WinAmp ver 5.56 on a Dell 2.8MHz computer with 2G of RAM
and WinXP Pro.
It will play .wmv, .flv, .wav, and .mp3 files.
It will no longer play .mp4 videos and when it plays .avi videos it
only plays the sound, no video.
I've tried the WinAmp Forum twice and no one answerers me.
Will someone please tell me why it stopped playing these files and how

winamp is excellent.

At one point a few years ago, I spent a lot of time going through the
Winamp site and downloading hundreds of AVS presets. I loved to put
it on random while a guest was over and have them say "Whoa" a few
times while we were talking and listening to music.
Now I go back and there's such a sea of them, it's intensely difficult

Winamp 5.552 defect, won't maximize

Has anyone else been having problems with this release? It will
minimize to the task
bar but then not be able to come up again. I multitask and am not
able to use it.
I will uninstall because maybe it's just corrupted.
I'm hoping there is a way to not update new versions all the time.
Does winamp allow this?
