I recently purchased an HP computer and none of the HPs in the store take a second HD. Also, booting from a USB port does not show up in the boot menu. I looked at the bios and could not figure out how to boot from a USB port. The computer I bought is a a1730n.
I thought I could buy a computer where I could run Linux without repartitioning the HD, but I guess not.

Booting from USB should certainly be an option on any recent computer, I'd look again - did you have a USB device (preferably bootable) installed at the time? Another option might be to look at the 'supergrub' CD.

Well, the harddrive is big enough, so let linux repartition the drive. Just make sure you have the recovery cd ready and your personal files on cd/dvd.
From the description I read it has SATA and no free 3.5" enclosure inside, but you could put a 2nd SATA drive in, with a drive cage from another (old) computer, or otherwise (may use the 5" slot of the 2nd cd/dvd drive) with spacers. Now have a good look at your bios setup again, maybe "try other devices" for boot should help. -- vista policy violation: Microsoft optical mouse found penguin patterns on mousepad. Linux will happily share the same drive with other o/s's. I have six machines, each with one hard drive. All are set up to multiboot linux (2 flavors), windows and DOS using Grub as the bootloader. No problemo.
There is only one SATA cord so I would have to get a splitter, or at least that is what the tech in the store told me. The tech at Best Buy did not recommend that I do that. It doesnt seem to have any option for booting from USB devices.
I can't believe I can't go to Best Buy and get a dual boot friendly computer. IMO, repartitioning the HD is a suboptimal solution, especially when one of the OS's is windows.

Sure. Just stick in a singe CD Linux (Knopix, Mandriva-one,....)

Hmm. Only one cord, but I cannot believe it has only one socket on the mainboard? The cord isn't *such* expensive ... Now, if you have a cd/dvd burner on a IDE cable, that one may well have a 2nd connector so you can attach a PATA harddrive, as slave.

Most recent linux distributions can do that (shrink a windows install and install themselves behind) just fine. Though I have no experiences with vista, maybe there are some nasties like nonmoveable blocks near the end of the partition. But then, ntfs-3g still can read and write to a vista-formatted ntfs ....
