Thanks to all for the generous feedback. I'm looking forward to this
one. I decided to pick up another cooler to use instead of the stock
Intel, mostly to have on hand in case I want to.
[link]
With kind regards,
Ron

I expect that you will be able to run Windows 7 64-bit with the Core2
Duo just fine. I have used less powerful dual-core AMD processors with
this OS and haven't had any problems. Going 64-bit will give you a bit
more use out of your 4 GB of RAM and will allow you to add more RAM
later on.
Tim Mastrogiacomo

If sound quality is important (ie you have HiFi separates rather than a midi
system)
then a sound card is a must.
if those movies include HD/Bluray then a plug-in card like an ATI HD3400 or
HD 4400
with a passive heatsink - not fast enough for games but it'll take some of
the load off the CPU.
buy an OEM processor (retail ones have crap heatsinks) and spend a little

I can lower my requirements as there is no gaming involved, for
example. My main activity is writing ham radio software for linux, so
if the compiler takes a little longer, no problem. I also study
antenna designs using a graphical version of the NEC2 program that I
have produced. This can also be a heavy CPU resource user but again

I tend to agree with most of this but if price is important I wouldn't
bother with a quad core CPU. You can get some good low power CPUs
from AMD and a low power system will be easier to keep quiet.
And I find a lot of OEMs tend to build down to a price, so you are
likely to get a noisy system with cheap components.

How much bigger (in volume) are polymer capacitors than
electrolytics for the same value?
Are there any types of capacitors with substantially better life
than electrolytics that are small enough to replace electrolytics?
If so, how do they compare in price?
