I was wondering why Ashampoo didn't list a free version. This is a
really old 6.76 version. They're up to version 9 now (and when
Lightscribe got added, if you care about that) but it's not free at that
version.

'dd' can be used as well:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=4k conv=notrunc
In fact, I believe that DBAN uses 'dd' at its core.

Ashampoo is great for CD's. Have never tried it with DVD's; I use
DVDFlick.

If you want to go the thorough path, as well as getting a portable
tool to keep for future use, all you need is some sort of bootable
Linux distribution, such as Knoppix, that has the “shred” tool
