Its classic interface is getting too much junk! I can't imagine how much worse the so-called new interface would be....
Is there a way to remove all those non-email related stuff? Or should I move everything to Gmail?

I have both. Agree on Yahoo classic not doing well. But... Two problems with Gmail. It is quite different than Yahoo mail - takes getting used to, and it does not support "nick-names" in the contacts list. Nick-names let me use two letter codes for regular contacts, Also, it looks different.
OTOH Google has lots of money and will be around for a while.

Privoxy gets rid of the right-hand-side adverts. I have opera set up with privoxy and thunderbird without for the odd site that objects to a proxy (although you can toggle it on/off). screen shot of opera here - ads are replaced with either a chequered pattern or just text 'advertisement' http://www.imageno.com/d4yd8cpi07rmpic.html
I'm currently using linux ver 3.0.12 but windows users are stuck with 3.0.8

Does it work with Firefox?

yes
have a look at "quickstart after installation" on the privoxy site.
the proxy settings for firefox are in Edit -> Preferences then 'Advanced -> 'Network' -> 'Connection' -> 'Setup' then enable 'Manual Proxy' and use (http proxy) 127.0.0.1 and (port) 8118
I've used privoxy for years and I know its not the easiest to understand and configure.

Yes, I found that as well, The UK version is 'BT-Yahoo' so I don't know if its the same around the world. My Yahoo account is really a legacy from many years ago that I hardly use these days, I have a "restricted" account with my ISP then several gmail/googlemail accounts for different purposes. Much prefer gmail.
> The junk is really only on the lead-in page(s). > Messages list and messages themselves are clean - no junk.
Yahoo Mail should offer a text-only interface! It's a total waste of time reading those front-page stuff and Yahoo Messenger at the sidebar....

This is not a (very) serious suggestion but why not a text only browser. I got into the internet just as dos applications were being replaced by windows and it is much easier these days.
Just tried OffbyOne, and to my surprise it logged on to BT-Yahoo.

Use the pop3 for everyday use, and webmail is there for you to use when away from home

Well you did hit some of the annoyances, esp with Yahoo. But it does work, albeit slowly sometimes. If it is really slow there is always solitare for a minute or two:-))

Pick a webmail with IMAP or your webmail experience will suck bigtime if you access via POP only (client and web). -- _?_ Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Well, Thunderbird has a webmail extension that fetches email from your Yahoo inbox (and inbox only) like POP3.

I am also a legacy Yahoo! Email Classic user. More and more social networking tools, widgets, and craplets are being injected all the time. When they added the Yahoo Messenger to the left side of the Classic Mail Page, I found the only way I could keep from having myself announced as being online to those who have me on their lists was to disable Flash. I use Prefbar with Firefox to uncheck flash till I need it. It can be found here: http://prefbar.mozdev.org/ That has been one way to help keep Yahoo Classic Email simple for me.

I have FlashBlock installed in my Firefox. So FlashBlock alone doesn't work?

Many Yahoo Mail accounts now have free POP3 access. I have three accounts and two are accessible with POP3. I have no idea why the third doesn't work. Perhaps they are implementing it in stages.
Incoming Mail Server (POP3): pop.mail.yahoo.com Use account name before the @yahoo.com as user name and the password. I am using SSL on port 995.
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.mail.yahoo.com I am using SSL on port 465. Set Server requires authentication and use the Logon info from the incoming mail.
I think non SSL access works also, but I wanted SSL.

I should have said use the correct Yahoo password in case that wasn't obvious.
